No One Rides Alone

March 9th, 2010 admin

I know some people who will not ride unless they have company. I am not one of those people. I like riding with another person or with a small group (or even, occasionally, a large group), but I’m also happy to go riding by myself. And yet, I never ride alone. There’s always that stupid voice in my head, right there with me, providing a narrative, giving advice, and making remarks about my riding ability. Frankly, I don’t care for…

Toolbox: Supporting Yourself
Message by NONE Support for your riding comes not only from other people in your life. It also comes from you. Or does it? Giving yourself what you need and not giving yourself what you dont need affects your performance, fun, and results on the bike. The mentally fit cyclist knows what kinds of self-support are most important, along with when and...
Comfort Rides
I love it when someone takes me out on a new ride — whether it be a trail or road route close to home, or somewhere far out of town. Adding a new place to be on my bike is always great. That said, I think there’s a good reason why, 95% (oh yes, I totally keep track my new v. old ride ratio; don’t you?) of my rides are on the same...
So Much Potential
So Much Potential
A Note from Fatty: I know I promised to talk about the wetsuit vs. no wetsuit experiment today, but my mind’s on Moab. Tomorrow is Kenny’s annual Ride Around White Rim in One Day (RAWROD) group ride. It is easily one of the top rides of the year. A largeish group of people, riding around the White Rim, at an easy pace. If it’s...
Inside the Tour with John Wilcockson: Everyone needed a rest after that stage
Every day at this Tour de France, Team RadioShack press officer Philippe Maertens comes to the press room with his laptop and sets up an audio file of Lance Armstrong’s post-stage comments. Normally, a dozen or so journalists gather round and poke their voice recorders at the computer and later use some of the seven-time winner’s quotes in their...
De Ronde Roadside: Checking The Course!
Message by Matt Conn The Ronde van Vlaanderen for cyclo tourists forms a significant part of the activities surrounding the famous Belgian bike race. The plan today was to do a bit more of the press thing in the morning and then try and catch up with a few of the people we knew doing the ride later in the day. With 19,000 people out riding their bikes,...
100 Miles of Nowhere, Daddy-Daughter Division
100 Miles of Nowhere, Daddy-Daughter Division
I’m happy to report I am the repeat winner of the “my neighborhood” 100 MoN. The course was a 1.6 mile loop, which is pretty flat, and potentially fast, but the wind and my focus on not overtraining took care of the speed. My daughter joined me for 30 miles of the ride, as shown in the attached photo – her longest ride...
Toolbox: Networking
Message by Bruce Hendler One of the keys to becoming a successful bike racer (or anything in life) is to have a strong core and trusted group, or network, around you that serves as your personal team of advisors. The purpose of the network is to serve as an advisory group to the athlete, a place where they can go for education, trusted advice, information...
100 Miles of Nowhere: Bittersweet Division
100 miles of nowhere was my first century ride. The day for me was both amazing and sad. My friends (who are much more accomplished cyclists than I) and I chose a 13.75 mile loop to ride 7 times. The day was incredibly windy, with 25-30 MPH winds coming from the NW. My friends took turns providing me with a wind break on the windy side of the ride....
Tour Coach: Stalemate Today Lays Groundwork For Tomorrow
Message by NONE Analysis St.14: Stage 14 of the 2010 Tour de France was relatively strange. Andy Schleck and Alberto Contador are essentially riding a different race than everyone else in the peloton, and they seem to care only about each other.  Read More →
PEZ Rides The PAV: Ouch!
Message by Richard Pestes It was a day of historic and epic proportions. Weve journeyed far, across continents, oceans, and the toughest roads in Europe, to arrive at the route for Sundays Hell of the North Paris-Roubaix. Me and my butt found out first hand what its like to ride the pav.  Read More →
